At Booking.com, we always want to deliver exactly the information that is relevant to the user so they can make an informed and confident decision. Often times this means guessing what information is important for certain types of bookers. But when you guess, you might get it wrong. On the User Generated Content team, we asked ourselves…

Why not just ask users what is important to them?

That led us to the idea of listing out common hotel facilities (non-smoking rooms, pets allowed, wifi, etc) and asking each user which of these facilities were important to them. We store this in their user profile and then we can use this to customize their experience on their next booking. The potential benefits for this type of customized data are far reaching.
